MR Arthrography Shoulder & Joints

What is Magnetic Resonance Arthrography?
This imaging technique allows for very high resolution MRI images to be obtained in multiple projections of your joint (eg, shoulder, wrist, etc). The technique is a highly accurate method to detect tears in tendons and joint cartilage surfaces.

How do I prepare for the procedure?
Please arrive at Registration 15 minutes prior to your appointment. You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your exam. Metal objects can affect the image, so avoid clothing with zippers and snaps. You will also be asked to remove hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses and hearing aids. Please inform the staff if there is a possibility of pregnancy.

How is the procedure performed?
The skin over your joint is anesthetized with local anesthetic; a small needle is placed into the joint and a water soluble solution is injected into the joint space. This stretches the joint lining and allows for highly detailed joint MRI scans.

What should I expect after the procedure?
Your joint will likely be sore for a couple days after the test, you may resume normal activity one day after the test.

Magnetic Resonance arthrography is available at the following locations:
California Advanced Imaging at CPMC (San Francisco)
Seton Medical Center (San Mateo County)
Mills Peninisula (San Mateo County)
